Biography

Professor Yu Zhang is a distinguished faculty member at the Department of Preventive and Restorative Sciences, Penn Dental Medicine. He earned his B.S. in Physics from Shanghai Normal University in 1986, followed by an M.S. in Physics from La Trobe University in 1997. He obtained his Ph.D. in Materials Science Engineering from Monash University in 2002. Dr. Zhang completed a Research Fellowship in the same field at Monash University and worked jointly on projects with New York University College of Dentistry and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Prior to joining Penn Dental Medicine, he was on faculty at NYU College of Dentistry, where he was recognized for his excellence in research and teaching, receiving the Kathleen C. Kinnally Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement in 2018. Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on advancing dental biomedical devices, analyzing wear fatigue behaviors, and improving the fracture resistance of dental materials. He has held various prestigious positions, including Associate Editor for the International Journal of Prosthodontics and President of the Dental Materials Group of the International Association for Dental Research.
