Biography

Yuan Yi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Concordia University. Her research interests encompass a global perspective on the history of science and technology, particularly focusing on transpacific histories and the textile production technology industry. Her book project, 'Handmade Factory: Machine Complicated Politics Knowledge Transpacific Cotton Industry, 1890-1937,' examines the mechanization of cotton spinning in China with an emphasis on the transpacific circulation of spinning machines and cotton varieties, as well as the roles of engineers, mechanics, and female machine operators. Additionally, her project on 'Yellow Cotton: Nankeen, Biodiversity, Variety Capitalism, 1750-2000,' explores early transpacific trade, particularly the rise and fall of nankeen, a handwoven cotton fabric from Nanjing. The research investigates how global capitalism and the exploitation of natural resources have shaped this industry. Originally from South Korea, Yuan earned her PhD from Columbia University in 2020 and has since held a postdoctoral fellowship before joining Concordia's faculty in 2022. She welcomes inquiries from students and international students interested in her research.
