Biography

Yuthika Sharma works on visual culture in South Asia during the early modern colonial period. Her research spans a range of topics including colonialism, culture, gender, and labor relations. Her publication, an emerging dissertation research titled 'Princes Painters Mughal Delhi 1707-1857' (co-authored with William Dalrymple, published by Yale University Press, 2013), focuses on artistic identity and knowledge exchange in long 18th century Anglo-Mughal India. She has written about portraiture practice, proto-colonial survey strategies, and the contested art history of ivory souvenirs and the role of 'oriental' commodities in the British domestic sphere. Dr. Sharma has curated numerous exhibitions in the UK and has worked with the British Museum. She continues to engage in art historical pedagogy as well as collecting and curatorial practice. Her research has been supported by the Leverhulme Trust and the Arts and Humanities Research Council, as well as the Paul Mellon Centre for British Art. Currently, she is writing on the historiography of artistic knowledge in long 18th century South Asia and its connections to the rise of nationalism. A parallel project considers the repackaging of Mughal manuscripts by Scots in the East India Company and the role of local artists as tastemakers. Her 'Introduction to Asian Art' course has been noted by the Daily Northwestern as a 'compelling' course for the Literature and Fine Arts foundational discipline requirement.
