Biography

Yutian An is an Assistant Professor at UCLA School of Law, specializing in Criminal Law, Comparative Law, and Chinese Law. His research lies at the intersection of criminal law and administrative law, focusing on the structure of legal systems, state-building activities, and the sociopolitical legitimization of authoritarian and democratic regimes. He examines how criminal law institutions interact with local law enforcement frameworks and the dynamic bureaucratic behavior shaping police conduct. Additionally, An evaluates the sociopolitical implications of judicialization in authoritarian contexts. His empirical research aims to produce theoretical insights into the comparative law and politics. An received his B.A. in Politics and Economics, magna cum laude, from Mount Holyoke College, and his J.D. from Yale Law School, where he served as the managing editor of the Yale Journal of International Law. He is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Politics at Princeton University, writing a dissertation entitled 'Legal Authoritarianism: Law, Police, Courts in China.'
