Biography

Yuyan Cheng, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the molecular and cellular events that shape neuronal functions in response to acute and chronic damage, aiming to inform potential therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases. Cheng's laboratory employs innovative techniques such as single-cell genomics, spatial transcriptomics, and CRISPR-based genetic tools to profile neuronal perturbations, exploring their interactions within the health-disease continuum. A key area of interest includes degenerative disorders affecting the retina and optic nerve, with the ultimate goal of translating genomic findings into gene and cell therapies to restore lost visual functions in patients. He obtained his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Miami in 2016.
