Yvonne Mary Adams is an Associate Professor at the Skin Immunology Research Center of the University of Copenhagen. Her research primarily focuses on malaria and the interactions between Plasmodium falciparum-infected red blood cells and host receptors such as ICAM-1, contributing to cerebral malaria. She investigates the effects of infected red blood cells on neural barriers utilizing human-derived organoid models to understand the blood-brain barrier and the blood-cerebral spinal fluid barrier. Dr. Adams is interested in adjunctive treatments for cerebral malaria, the development of blood outgrowth endothelial cells, and the creation of 3D cell culture models. She also explores novel transport mechanisms for drug delivery across the blood-brain barrier. As a member of the Lundbeck Foundation Investigator Network, she is actively engaged in teaching undergraduates and developing educational materials related to malaria research. Dr. Adams holds a PhD in Parasitology from Heidelberg University and has expertise in applied parasitology and medical entomology from her educational background at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the University of Glasgow.
