Biography

Yvonne Buys completed her MD degree and Ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto, followed by a Glaucoma Fellowship. She is a Full Professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences, where she has trained many ophthalmology residents and over 40 glaucoma fellows. A prolific contributor to the field, Dr. Buys has published over 180 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 16 invited editorials, and 10 book chapters, and has made 500 presentations at meetings and symposiums globally. She has served in numerous leadership roles, including President and Board Member of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society. Dr. Buys has contributed to guideline development in various areas of glaucoma management and has received multiple awards for her pioneering work, including the Toronto Hospital Anderson Award and the University of Toronto Clive Mortimer Postgraduate Teaching Award. She retired from clinical practice in July 2020 but continues her research focusing on sex disparity in medical practice and the surgical backlog resulting from COVID-19. Outside of her professional life, she is a hobby farmer, bird watcher, and writes a weekly column in Wellington, Ontario.
