Biography

Dr. Yvonne Myal is a professor and associate head of the Department of Pathology at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. She has a background in molecular biology and earned her Bachelor of Science (Honors) from the University of Winnipeg, completing her Master's and PhD at the University of Manitoba under Dr. Robert Shiu, a renowned breast cancer researcher. Dr. Myal specializes in generating transgenic knockout mouse models for breast cancer, leading to her role in spearheading the Molecular Biology Diagnostic Laboratory at UM. Her research focuses on breast cancer biomarkers and their implications for cancer progression and metastasis, particularly the prolactin inducible protein (PIP). Dr. Myal's contributions have garnered funding from several provincial, national, and international agencies, including NSERC and CIHR. She is also actively involved in leadership roles within the college and community, having served as a CIHR delegate representative for UM. Her commitment to mentorship has been recognized with multiple awards, including the YWCA/YMCA Woman of Distinction Award and the Sanofi-Aventis Award for Excellence in Student Mentorship.
