Biography

Yvonne Petry is a Professor in the Department of History at Luther College, University of Regina, where she has been teaching since 1998. She specializes in early modern France, focusing particularly on the relationships between magic, religion, and medicine in the late sixteenth century. Her work delves into the intellectual boundaries of early modern thought and explores how social constructions of religion and science intersect. Petry has published extensively in the area of gender and Kabbalah in Renaissance France and has collaborated on interdisciplinary examinations of these subjects. Currently, her research centers on the attitudes of the French medical establishment from 1560 to 1650 towards magic and witchcraft, examining how early modern physicians and surgeons sought to understand physical and mental illness within the preternatural and supernatural realms. She is working on a monograph tentatively titled 'Illness and Infection in the Era of European Witchcraft', which investigates the role of these elements in shaping medical understanding during that period. Petry's findings have been presented at significant conferences, such as the Sixteenth Century Studies Society and the Renaissance Society of America.
