Biography

Yvonne van Zeeland graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) with merit from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University, Netherlands, in 2004. After a short period working in a companion animal clinic, she completed an internship in Companion Animal Medicine and a residency in Avian Medicine at Utrecht University. She became a Diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine (ECZM-Avian) after passing the board exam in April 2013 and later obtained de facto recognition in Small Mammal Specialty within the college. Her daily work primarily involves treating exotic species including birds, small mammals, and reptiles. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, Yvonne is deeply engaged in teaching and research projects, particularly focusing on the medical and behavioral aspects of veterinary practice. She has become a certified parrot behavior consultant and is a key member of the Veterinary Behaviour Clinic team at Utrecht, addressing behavioral issues in parrots. Since 2009, she has conducted extensive research on feather damaging behavior in grey parrots. Yvonne has actively contributed to the advancement of avian and exotic animal medicine through her lectures, publications, and roles in various professional organizations. She served as the President of the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) from 2018 to 2019 and currently holds several prestigious positions, including the Avian Scientific Chair for the European Association of Avian Veterinarians (EAAV). She received Lafeber’s Avian Practitioner Year Award in 2021 for her outstanding contributions to the field.
