Professor Elkins’ research focuses on issues of democracy, institutional reform, and national identity, with an emphasis on cases in Latin America. He is currently completing a book manuscript titled 'Steal Constitution: Drift Mastery Constitutional Design' which examines the design diffusion of democratic institutions. His research explores the origins and consequences of national constitutions. Along with Tom Ginsburg from the University of Chicago, Professor Elkins co-directs the Comparative Constitutions Project, a National Science Foundation-funded initiative aimed at understanding the causes and consequences of constitutional choices. Additionally, the project's website, Constitute, provides resources for the analysis of constitutional drafters in new democracies. Elkins earned his B.A. from Yale University, his M.A. from the University of Texas at Austin, and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
