Dr. Zachary Lipton

Biography

Zachary Lipton is an Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), jointly appointed to the Tepper School of Business and the Machine Learning Department, with additional affiliation to the Heinz School of Public Policy. His research spans core machine learning methods theory and applications, particularly in healthcare and natural language processing. He is focused on the social implications of technology and how it interacts with social systems. With a PhD from UC San Diego's Artificial Intelligence Group, Zachary leads the Correct Machine Intelligence Lab, a collaborative team fostering creativity and talent. His work includes building robust systems capable of adjusting to changing environments due to distribution shifts and strategic manipulations. He is also interested in the intersections of representation learning and causality as well as leveraging machine learning to answer significant clinical questions. Zachary aims to bridge technical and social perspectives on machine learning through his blog, Approximately Correct.
