Biography

Zack Almquist is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Washington. He received his B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Oregon, M.S. in Statistics from Northwestern University, and both M.A. in Demography and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Irvine. His research focuses on the application of mathematical, computational, and statistical methodology to understand social networks, demography, education, homelessness, and environmental governance. Since joining the faculty at the University of Washington in 2020, he has been involved in research that models and predicts the effects of space and time on human interactions and social processes. Previously, he held a joint appointment as an Assistant Professor in Sociology and the School of Statistics at the University of Minnesota, where he worked from 2013 to 2018. Additionally, he served as a research scientist in Demography and Survey Science at Facebook from 2018 to 2020. Almquist teaches graduate courses in AI, data science, and statistics, with a focus on social network analysis, computational social science, and urban sociology.
