Dr. Zahia Smail Salhi

Biography

Zahia Smail Salhi is an Honorary Professor at the University of Manchester specializing in Arabic Studies and Middle Eastern Studies. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Exeter and has significant teaching experience, having trained at Mouloud Mammeri University in Algeria and taught at the University of Leeds from 1998 to 2012. Her research interests encompass Arabic literature, culture, and gender studies within the context of the Middle East and North Africa, focusing on classical and modern literatures with an emphasis on women's literature. She has supervised numerous postgraduate research projects and published work related to her fields of expertise. She served as Head of the Department of Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Leeds and has held significant positions such as Co-Director of the Centre for Advanced Study of Arab World at the University of Manchester. Salhi actively engages in academic communities, having held roles such as Vice-President of the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies and an editorial position in diverse journals. Her research includes the literary representations of the East-West encounter and feminist activism in literature. Salhi is also affiliated with various professional bodies and has contributed to the study of Middle Eastern gender issues.
