Biography

Zane Cohen obtained his MD degree in 1969 from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto and completed his general surgical residency in the Gallie Program. He spent time in the United Kingdom for clinical training and research in transplantation immunology. In 1977, he joined the staff of the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto and the Division of General Surgery at the Toronto General Hospital, eventually becoming a Professor. In 1990, he transitioned to Mount Sinai Hospital as Surgeon-in-Chief, a position he held until June 30, 2006. Cohen has held significant roles, including Chairman of the Division of General Surgery and served from 1996 to 2001 on the Promotions Committee of the Department of Surgery. He is recognized for his contributions to colon rectal surgery, specializing in sphincter-saving operations and innovative surgical techniques. Cohen co-founded the Canadian Society of Colon Rectal Surgeons and was instrumental in developing the Colon Rectal Training Program at the University of Toronto. He has authored over 230 manuscripts and book chapters primarily focused on Inflammatory Bowel Disease and colorectal cancer. Noteworthy awards include the Finkelstein Award for Continued Excellence in Research and the Colin R. Woolf Award for Excellence in Innovation.
