Biography

Zara Maxwell-Smith is an interdisciplinary researcher and lecturer focusing on Indonesian Studies within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at UNSW Canberra. She completed her doctorate at the Australian National University in 2024 and has taught at various universities and schools from 2013 to 2023. Additionally, she has conducted research for the Australian government. Zara holds a Graduate Diploma in Education and two Bachelor’s degrees in Arts and Asian Studies, with a major in Indonesian Language. Her current research interests include the Indonesian language, linguistics, and the politics and culture of Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific. She is particularly engaged in Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Automated Speech Recognition, and the implications of Equity AI and Open Source technologies on Asian literacy and language education. Zara is also supervising Fadhila Pratiwi on a project about the securitization of Cyber Security in Indonesia.
