Biography

Zavier Nunn is a historian specializing in trans subjectivity and the governing of sex and change, particularly focused on the historical formation and administration of medical and legal transition during the Weimar and Nazi Germany periods. Nunn's monograph, 'Trans Liminality: Life in Weimar and Nazi Germany,' published by Duke University Press, challenges the prevailing paranoid paradigms in trans history. It highlights how trans history is structured by phobias that lead to romantic and tragic outcomes. Through this work, Nunn narrates the story of transition shaped by historical arrangements of labor productivity, sexuality, race, and the policing of transition, which reflect societal values and anxieties surrounding gender non-conformity. Currently, Nunn is engaged in new projects that discuss the mutable nature of sex from individual historical perspectives, particularly concerning legal (re)classification of sex. Nunn's teaching at Northwestern includes classes on trans history, histories of sexual difference, queer histories, and the Holocaust.
