Dr. Zbig Wojnowski

Biography

Zbig Wojnowski is an Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, specifically attached to St Antony's College within the Faculty of History. He holds a PhD from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London, obtained in 2011. Wojnowski joined Oxford in 2022 after several years of academic work at Nazarbayev University and the University of Roehampton in London. His research primarily focuses on interethnic relations and imperial dynamics within the context of Soviet history, particularly in Ukraine, Russia, and Central Asia. His book, "The Near Abroad: Socialist Eastern Europe and Soviet Patriotism Ukraine," scrutinizes how ideas and human movement across borders have influenced Ukrainian-Soviet identities following Stalin's death. He has also published extensively on the themes of identity politics in Crimea and the role of popular culture in shaping national projects in Ukraine, as well as examining the impacts of de-Stalinization on the Central Asian peripheries of the Soviet Union. His current research includes a monograph that extends the studies of Soviet identity politics through the 1980s and 1990s. Notably, Wojnowski sheds light on the socio-political unrest in the Soviet Union, cultural diplomacy during the Cold War, and the evolving international relations in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. His work engages with themes of marginalization and explores the intersections of political and cultural narratives in the post-Soviet context.
