Zengjian Jeffrey Chen is the D. J. Sibley Centennial Professor of Plant Molecular Genetics in the Department of Molecular Biosciences at the University of Texas at Austin. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Zhejiang Agricultural University (now Zhejiang University), a Master of Science from Nanjing Agricultural University, and a Doctorate in Genetics from Texas A&M University. After completing postdoctoral training at the University of Minnesota and serving as a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Postdoctoral Fellow at Washington University in St. Louis, he joined the faculty at Texas A&M in 1999. He was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2005 and later moved to the University of Texas at Austin in 2008. Chen's research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of gene expression changes and the evolutionary consequences of hybrids and allopolyploids, particularly using Arabidopsis, cotton, and corn as experimental systems. His innovative research program employs genomic, proteomic, and systems biology approaches, linking epigenetic changes to phenotypic traits. He has published extensively and is recognized as a pioneering figure in understanding the impacts of genomic alterations in plants. He has been elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB).
