Biography

Zengtao Chen, a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta since August 2014, has an extensive background in Mechanics and Materials. Prior to his current position, he spent a decade as a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick. His research interests encompass Mechanics, Materials Modelling, and Damage Fracture Mechanics. Recent work by Dr. Chen includes multiscale modelling of deformation and damage evolution in aluminum and steel alloys, advanced thermal stress analysis of smart materials and structures, as well as nanostructures and composite structures. He has received numerous accolades including the APEGA Frank Spragins Technical Award in 2024 and has been recognized as a Fellow by several professional societies including the Canadian Academy of Engineering, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Chen is involved in teaching key courses such as Mechanical Engineering Laboratory and Macro Fracture Mechanics, equipping future engineers with vital skills in experimental techniques and fracture mechanics concepts.
