Dr. Zeray Alemseged

Biography

Zeray Alemseged is a Donald N. Pritzker Professor at the University of Chicago, specializing in Organismal Biology and Anatomy. His work is primarily focused on human evolution, particularly the origins and diversification of early hominins during the Mio-Pliocene era. Alemseged’s research aims to explore the evolutionary history of the earliest human ancestors and the subsequent human-ape split that occurred approximately 7 million years ago. His investigative efforts include deciphering phylogenetic relationships and patterns of species diversity among early hominins, while also analyzing anatomical, behavioral, and dietary adaptations. Alemseged emphasizes that understanding early hominins requires a comprehensive grasp of the paleoenvironmental and paleoecological contexts in which evolutionary processes unfolded. His research encompasses both fieldwork, aimed at the discovery of hominin and nonhuman fossils across Plio-Pleistocene sites, and laboratory work involving the preparation and analysis of fossil remains. He employs advanced imaging techniques to investigate the internal and external anatomies of fossils and conducts faunal studies to explore the ecological factors influencing human and primate evolution. Furthermore, he has engaged in various academic and public presentations, including a TED talk entitled 'The Search for Humanity's Roots.'
