Biography

Zewdi Tsegai is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy at the University of Chicago. His research primarily focuses on understanding the evolution of bipedalism and reconstructing locomotion in early fossil human relatives (hominins). Using an integrative approach, his lab employs a combination of skeletal morphology and biomechanical studies to explore the functional morphology of human and ape skeletons and reconstruct the locomotor and tool use behavior of these fossil hominins. The ongoing key areas of research include functional morphology of the foot, changes in skeletal growth, and the inter- and intra-specific variability in internal bone morphology. Zewdi completed his Ph.D. at Leipzig University and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology from 2018 to 2021 and at the University of Kent from 2022 to 2023. He is committed to fostering new talent in the field and welcomes applications from potential undergraduate interns, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers interested in his lab's work.
