Biography

H. Zeynep Bulutgil is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at University College London. Her research interests focus on political violence, political institutions, state formation, religion and politics, nationalism, and ethnic politics. One of her notable research projects explored the conditions and processes that lead to or prevent ethnic cleansing, culminating in the publication of her monograph, 'Roots of Ethnic Cleansing in Europe' (Cambridge University Press, 2016; 2018), which won the 2017 Book Award from the European Politics Society Section of the American Political Science Association (APSA). She has published articles on topics related to ethnic cleansing, political violence, social cleavages, and political mobilization in journals such as International Security and Journal of Peace Research. Bulutgil's recent monograph, 'Origins of Secular Institutions: Ideas, Timing, Organization' (Oxford University Press, 2022), examines the emergence of secular political movements and the detachment of state institutions from religious actors. She has received multiple awards for her work, including the British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship (2019-2020) and the 2023 Hubert Morken Book Award from APSA. Additionally, she serves as the Director of Research at UCL's Department of Political Science and holds the position of Associate Editor at Nationalities Papers.
