Biography

Zhanfei Liu is a Professor in the Department of Marine Science at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on the source, distribution, and changes of organic compounds in marine environments, which are critical for understanding the global carbon cycle and nutrient dynamics. Liu is particularly interested in the geochemical behaviors of petroleum hydrocarbons in marine settings. Recently, he has shifted his research attention to nurdles, which are small plastic particles that have been increasingly found in marine environments. His work examines the potential for these particles to absorb toxins that may harm wildlife. Liu's contributions to the field enhance our understanding of the interactions between marine organic compounds and the biotic and abiotic factors in oceanic ecosystems.
