Biography

Zhen-Gang Wang is the Dick and Barbara Dickinson Professor of Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology. He received his Bachelor of Science from Beijing University in 1982 and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1987. He has held various positions at Caltech, starting as an Assistant Professor in 1991, then becoming an Associate Professor in 1997, and achieving full Professor status in 2002. Additionally, he has served as the Executive Officer of Chemical Engineering since 2019. His research focuses on statistical mechanics, particularly in relation to phase transitions and dynamics of complex fluids, polymers, and biophysics. Wang aims to bridge molecular interactions with macroscopic properties to understand the behavior of materials and systems on a fundamental level. His current projects include studying nucleation phenomena, the dynamics of constrained polymers, and thermodynamic properties relevant to complex biological systems. Wang is also dedicated to teaching and has developed several courses in statistical thermodynamics and chemical thermodynamics at Caltech.
