Biography

Professor Zhengming Chen's primary research focuses on the causes, prevention, and treatment of major chronic diseases. Over the years, he has initiated and led large international randomized trials (e.g., CAST, COMMIT/CCS-2) involving more than 100,000 patients, leading to substantial alterations in international guidelines and clinical practice. In 2003, he founded and became the principal investigator of the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB), which includes 512,000 adults and is known as the world's largest of its kind. CKB continues to produce significant findings relevant to global health for the next 15-20 years. Professor Chen leads a large, expanding multi-disciplinary research team consisting of over 50 staff and DPhil students, focusing on various research themes such as lifestyle factors, environmental health, chronic infection, genetic epidemiology, risk prediction, and the application of big data in the development of precision medicine for population health. He qualified in medicine from Shanghai Medical University (now Fudan University) in 1983 and completed his DPhil in Epidemiology at the University of Oxford in 1991. He was awarded an ad hominem Readership in Epidemiology in 1998 and an ad hominem Professorship in 2006. In 2022, he was appointed the inaugural Richard Peto Chair in Epidemiology.
