Professor Zhengming Chen's primary research focus is on the causes, prevention, and treatment of major chronic diseases. He has initiated and led large international randomized trials, such as CAST and COMMIT/CCS-2, involving over 100,000 patients and leading to significant changes in international clinical practice guidelines. In 2003, he established the UK PI role for the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB), which includes 512,000 adults and is the largest of its kind worldwide. CKB continues to generate vital findings relevant to global health for the next 15-20 years. He leads a substantial and expanding multidisciplinary research team at Oxford, consisting of over 50 staff and doctoral students. His research themes encompass lifestyle factors, environmental health, chronic infections, genetic epidemiology, risk prediction, big data application, and the development of precision medicine in population health. He studied medicine at Shanghai Medical University in 1983, completed his DPhil in Epidemiology at the University of Oxford in 1991, and was awarded an ad hominem Readership in Epidemiology in 1998 and a Professorship in 2006. In 2022, he was appointed the inaugural Richard Peto Chair of Epidemiology and holds honorary professorships at several universities in China.
