Biography

Zhenmei Zhang received her PhD degree in Sociology from Pennsylvania State University and joined the faculty of Michigan State University in 2006. Her expertise includes aging, the life course, family health, and racial/ethnic disparities in health, as well as elder abuse and neglect. Dr. Zhang's research specifically focuses on the effects of social relationships on both physical and cognitive health throughout life. Her extensive research includes examining racial and ethnic differentials across a variety of health outcomes, cognitive impairment, chronic health issues, and active life expectancy. Recently, she has been exploring life-course determinants of cognitive impairment and dementia in both the United States and China, utilizing life-course theories to identify the psychosocial and economic mechanisms underlying disparities in late-life cognitive health. Her research has been funded by various institutions including the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare, with her work published in multiple reputable journals including the Journal of Health and Social Behavior, Social Science & Medicine, and the Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences.
