Dr. Zhongping Chen

Biography

Zhongping Chen is a Professor in the History Department at the University of Victoria. His academic background includes a B.A. and M.A. from Nanjing University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii, earned in 1998. His teaching experience extends to Nanjing Normal University and McGill University, where he lectured on Chinese history from premodern to modern times and the history of the Chinese diaspora. He has been at the University of Victoria since 2002 and has participated in numerous federally funded projects, most notably those focusing on Victoria’s Chinatown and the Chinese diaspora. Chen's research interests cover socioeconomic history of late imperial China, sociopolitical history during Republican China, urban history, local history of the Lower Yangzi Region, and the global history of the Chinese diaspora. He has published extensively, with a focus on the intersections of China’s historical narratives and global contexts, highlighting crucial periods such as the Ice Age in Chinese history. His commitment to documentary research in the historical development of urban centers in the Lower Yangzi Region is evident in both his teaching and published works.
