Biography

Zih-Yun “Sarah” Chiu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University. Her research focuses on developing intelligent robotic systems capable of operating in complex medical environments. Chiu's work utilizes mathematical modeling and general knowledge from skilled medical professionals to empower robots to see, plan, move, and learn effectively. Recognized as a 2024 Rising Star in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a 2025 Robotics: Science and Systems Pioneer, Chiu has received accolades such as the Paper Award at the 2023 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation and the Poster Award at the 2023 ICRA Workshop on New Evolutions in Surgical Robotics. She obtained her PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2025 from the University of California, San Diego, after completing her BS in Electrical Engineering at National Taiwan University in 2017.
