Ziv Scully is an Assistant Professor at Cornell University in the Department of Operations Research and Information Engineering. He completed his PhD at Carnegie Mellon University's Computer Science Department, where he was advised by Mor Harchol-Balter and Guy Blelloch. Scully has spent a year at the Simons Institute at UC Berkeley, engaging in the D3P program, and has also been involved with Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. His research focuses broadly on decision-making under uncertainty, particularly in the context of stochastic control. He is especially interested in problems related to queueing theory, which encompasses areas such as scheduling, load balancing, and resource allocation. This was a significant aspect of his PhD thesis. Scully also explores Bayesian optimization through the lens of similar technical tools, notably Gittins indices. Additionally, he is privileged to advise a group of talented students including Qian Xie and Amit Harlev, both pursuing PhDs, along with undergraduate Natalie Nguyen, who is applying to PhD programs.
