Dr. Zohreh Bayatrizi

Biography

Zohreh BayatRizi is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Alberta. She completed her MA and PhD at the University of British Columbia and obtained her BA from the University of Tehran. Her research focuses on the sociology of death and grief, particularly within the context of Iran, as well as broader historical and sociological studies. In her work, she critically examines how societal structures shape experiences of grief and how these experiences are discussed within different cultural frameworks. BayatRizi advocates for a transnational perspective on grief studies, underscoring the disparities between the Global North and Global South in terms of mortality and grief narratives. Furthermore, she is involved in a SSHRC-funded project exploring class inequality in Canada. BayatRizi utilizes innovative pedagogical methods in her teaching, emphasizing the importance of primary texts and critical thinking. She has a particular interest in writing and the development of strong analytical skills in her students.
