Biography

Zoltan Haiman is a Professor of Astronomy at Columbia University, where he focuses on theoretical astrophysics and cosmology. He earned his Ph.D. in Astronomy from Harvard University in 1998 and completed his B.S. in Physics and Electrical Engineering at MIT. Haiman has held postdoctoral positions at Fermilab and Princeton University, where he began to explore the complexities of black holes and the universe's structure. His key research interests include the formation of stars and black holes, the growth of black holes, and the nature of dark energy and dark matter through extensive astronomical surveys. Haiman is known for his work in simulations of black hole mergers, large-scale simulations of weak gravitational lensing, and developing tools using neural networks to extract cosmological information from non-Gaussian features of stochastic gravitational lensing signals. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles, mentored 12 Ph.D. students in Astronomy and Physics, and received several prestigious awards including NASA's Hubble Fellowship and the NYAS Blavatnik Award for Young Scientists. Haiman currently contributes to NASA's concept study for the X-ray satellite Lynx and was recognized as one of Popular Science's Brilliant 10 young scientists in 2002.
