Biography

Dr. Zoran Radic graduated from the University of Zagreb in Croatia, where he began his research in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) reaction kinetics under the mentorship of the late Dr. Elsa Reiner. His interests in the molecular structure of AChE brought him to UC San Diego as a postdoctoral researcher in the Palmer Taylor group, where he contributed to functional mapping of the AChE molecule using site-directed mutagenesis to define structural domains and amino acid residues critical for catalytic activity and ligand interaction. Dr. Radic proposed a common, simplified kinetic scheme to describe the acetylcholine (ACh) turnover of AChE, a structurally and functionally close relative to butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). He developed fluorescence-based assays for monitoring cholinergic ligand interactions and has led multiple NIH-funded collaborative projects with various institutions, aiming to develop novel oxime reactivators for organophosphate-inhibited AChE and BChE. His academic achievements include a B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Zagreb.
