Biography

Zülâl Muslu is an Assistant Professor of Legal History in the Department of Public Law and Governance at Tilburg Law School. She received her PhD in Law in 2018 from Paris Nanterre, with a doctoral thesis entitled 'Ottoman Sovereignty and Mixed Commercial Courts in the Long 19th Century.' Before joining Tilburg University, she held a postdoctoral position at the Vienna Law School, where she served as the Deputy Head of the research group 'Translations and Transitions' at the Max-Planck Institute in Frankfurt. Muslu's expertise lies in global legal history and the history of international laws, with a particular focus on the late Ottoman Empire. Her research explores semi-colonial and decolonial dynamics, the interplay of law and emotions, and the crisis of institutional trust. Muslu has held visiting positions at institutions such as Boğaziçi, Oxford, and KU Leuven, and has delivered invited lectures in cities including Milan, Istanbul, and Taipei.
