Janice H. Hammond is the Jesse Philips Professor of Manufacturing, Emerita at Harvard Business School. She retired in July 2025, previously serving as Senior Associate Dean and Director of Faculty Planning. Hammond's academic contributions include being the course head for the MBA required course on Data Science for Managers and co-developing the Operations Supply Chain Management course within the Harvard Business Analytics Program. Her research focuses on speed and flexibility in manufacturing and logistics systems, emphasizing the need for organizations to adapt quickly to changing customer demands. Her work has examined the interface between manufacturing and retail organizations, with a significant portion conducted in the textile and apparel industries, supported by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. She has co-authored several significant publications on lean retailing and coordination in supply chains, including the book "A Stitch in Time: Lean Retailing Transformation Manufacturing—Lessons from the Textile Apparel Industries". In addition, Hammond has developed various e-learning courses, enhancing online education in business analytics and other topics. She holds a Sc.B. degree in Applied Mathematics from Brown University and a Ph.D. in Operations Research from MIT. Over her career, she has published widely in her field and provided consultation to major multinational corporations.
