Dr. Michelle Stone is an Associate Professor in Kinesiology at Dalhousie University, as well as an Associate Research Scholar with the Healthy Populations Institute. With a focus on pediatric physical activity health, her research is dedicated to enhancing children’s opportunities for physical activity and active outdoor play. She has served as the site principal investigator for the Canadian Assessment Physical Literacy (CAPL), evaluating the physical literacy levels of Canadian children aged 8-12 years. Additionally, she led the Physical Literacy Early Years (PLEY) project, which is a childcare-based outdoor loose parts play intervention that is part of the Lawson Foundation's Outdoor Play Strategy. Dr. Stone’s current research revolves around integrating outdoor loose parts play into early years settings, including schools and community spaces. She is an active member of Outdoor Play Canada and the Play, Learn Teach Outdoors Network (PLaTO-Net), collaborating with a national and global network of advocates and researchers. Her overarching goal is to improve the lives of children by ensuring access to quality outdoor play experiences where they live, learn, and play.
