Biography

Jerry Flores is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto Mississauga and a member of the Sociology tri-campus graduate department at the University of Toronto-St. George. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2014. His interdisciplinary research focuses on institutions such as schools and detention centers, examining how they intersect with the lives of at-risk Latina and Indigenous women and girls in North America. Flores pays particular attention to individuals' experiences shaped by intergenerational trauma, family violence, and various historical forms of gendered and racialized oppression. His work also investigates the cultural resurgence and preservation of the P’urhépecha people of Michoacán, Mexico. Throughout his career, he has received prestigious awards, including the Ford Foundation Fellowship and the UC President’s Post Doctoral Award, as well as the Distinguished Early Career Award from the American Sociological Association's section on youth and childhood studies. In addition to his scholarly contributions, he has authored a book titled "Caught" and has published multiple peer-reviewed articles, poetry, and news pieces.
