Dr. Barry Silverman

Professor

Biography

Barry Silverman is a Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering and Applied Science. His research primarily focuses on socio-cognitive agent models that assist humans in enhancing learning, performance, and systems thinking within simulated environments. These environments are meticulously designed to improve users' abilities to cope with complexity, non-linearities, and the emergence of unanticipated effects in the real world. Over the years, Barry has led research initiatives that secured $40 million in grants, which facilitated the creation of cutting-edge software tools and environments. He has authored 140 articles, developed one board game, and created six fielded game worlds for training and analysis, including Athena, Black Hawk, GeriCase, HeartSense, NonKin Village, and StateSim. Barry has been recognized as a Fellow of the IEEE and AAAS and has received multiple awards for his research and teaching excellence, including first place in the AI/Pattern Life category at the 2011 Federal Virtual World Competition.
