Gretar Tryggvason is the Charles Miller, Jr. Distinguished Professor and Department Head at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is widely recognized for his contributions to computational fluid dynamics and the development of methods for computations involving multiphase flows. His pioneering work includes direct numerical simulations of complex multiphase flows, as well as research into heat transfer, boiling, cavitation, solidification, surfactants, and chemical reactions. Tryggvason's experience extends to applications in turbulent bubbly flows, atomization, and additive manufacturing, alongside advanced numerical methods for tracking sharp fluid interfaces and averaged reduced order models. He has held significant positions, including chairing the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame from 2010 to 2017. He served as editor-in-chief for the Journal of Computational Physics from 2002 to 2015 and received his PhD from Brown University in 1985.
