Biography

Jenine Brown is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Ear Training and Music Theory at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. She joined the music theory department in 2015 after earning her Ph.D. in music theory from the Eastman School of Music. Holding degrees from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, Brown has also received numerous executive leadership training certificates from Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Her courses, which include undergraduate ear training and a graduate seminar exploring the intersection of music cognition and analysis, reflect her passion for guiding students in their journey of hearing musical structure. Brown has received notable awards, including the Catalyst Award (2023) and the COVID-19 Research Accelerator Grant (2021). Her research primarily takes an empirical approach, studying listener expectations and musical knowledge acquisition, with publications in journals such as Music Perception and Music Theory Spectrum. Additionally, Brown has contributed to the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy and other platforms regarding aural skills pedagogy and student engagement in music education. She has presented at various conferences, including the Society for Music Theory and the International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition. Brown has served as an associate editor and in various capacities for the Society for Music Theory, as well as being actively involved with the College Board's AP Music Theory exam since 2011.
