Biography

Abby Reisman is an Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. Before joining Penn GSE, she was a Visiting Professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, and a researcher at the National Center for Research, Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing at UCLA. She earned her Ph.D. from Stanford University and directed the "Reading Like a Historian" project, aimed at enhancing the history curriculum intervention in urban high schools. Her academic journey began as an education classroom teacher in a small progressive high school in New York City. Dr. Reisman's research focuses on the challenges of teaching document-based historical inquiry and the effective design and implementation of curriculum materials and assessments that enhance student learning. Her contributions to the field of education have been recognized with several awards, including the National Council for Social Studies Larry Metcalf Award and the American Historical Association William Gilbert Award. She has been awarded the NAEd/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship and the Middle States Council for Social Studies Harry J. Carmen Award for outstanding achievement in social studies research and teaching. Her published work includes notable articles in various esteemed journals and contributions to educational handbooks.
