Biography

Adam Shephard is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Warwick. His research focuses on developing artificial intelligence methods for early cancer detection, risk stratification, and biomarker discovery, with a particular emphasis on precancerous diseases, especially in head and neck cancer. Prior to joining the Tissue Image Analytics (TIA) Centre, Adam worked on the Cancer Research UK-funded ANTICIPATE project in collaboration with researchers at the University of Sheffield, applying deep learning in histopathology to improve the grading of oral epithelial dysplasia and predict the progression of malignancy. He has also been involved in projects related to laryngeal dysplasia and ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), collaborating with clinicians from various institutions. Adam contributes to the development and maintenance of the TIA Toolbox, an open-source Python library for computational pathology. He earned his PhD from Aston University, focusing on the application of deep learning in pediatric brain MRI. He has a keen interest in supervising MSc and PhD students in the intersections of artificial intelligence and medical imaging.
