Biography

Áine McMurtry joined King's College London in 2012 as a Reader in the Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures, specializing in modern German and Austrian literature and culture. Before King's, she was a Lecturer at Durham University and has taught at the Universities of St Andrews and Oxford. McMurtry completed her PhD at the Universities of Oxford and Hamburg with funding from the Alfred Toepfer Foundation and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. She spent significant time in Vienna conducting research at the Manuscripts Department of the Austrian National Library and served as the Reviews Editor for the international journal Austrian Studies from 2012 to 2016. Her research focuses on modern German-language literature, particularly experimental writing from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. McMurtry’s scholarly work employs critical theory and text analysis, exemplified in her book, "Crisis Form: Writing Ingeborg Bachmann." She has led numerous projects connecting research with teaching, fostering collaborations with cultural partners and facilitating creative endeavors such as student translation projects and film screenings. Her ongoing research includes contemporary translingual texts and their responses to socio-political issues such as forced migration. McMurtry has supervised many PhD students and has developed a vibrant research community within her department, also engaging with international partners for joint-PhD programs.
