Biography

Aixa D. Marchand is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She obtained her Ph.D. in the Combined Program in Education and Psychology with a certificate in African American Diasporic Studies from the University of Michigan in 2019. Her research applies an interdisciplinary lens to explore how societal, contextual, and cultural factors shape the academic experiences of students of color, focusing particularly on Black parents' critical consciousness. Dr. Marchand employs a multi-method approach to investigate the attributions that Black parents make regarding educational inequities and how these attributions relate to their children's engagement in schools. Her work also seeks to understand how Black immigrant parents perceive the relationship between home and school against the backdrop of expectations from their home countries. Additionally, her research inquiries aim to illuminate the impact of familial processes, such as familism and racial socialization, on adolescents’ academic experiences and socio-emotional wellbeing. Dr. Marchand is committed to using rigorous methodological tools to address and highlight societal inequities in educational settings.
