Biography

Alex McBratney holds degrees in Soil Science from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and the University of Sydney. He has made significant contributions to soil science and agriculture, notably in the areas of Pedometrics, Digital Soil Mapping, and Precision Agriculture. After completing his PhD at Rothamsted Experimental Station in the UK, he spent seven years at the CSIRO Division of Soils in Brisbane. Since joining the University of Sydney in 1989, he has been active as a researcher, educator, and director at the Sydney Institute of Agriculture. His research group focuses on soil resource assessment and has developed new methods for spatial analysis and soil classification using geostatistics and numerical approaches. McBratney has authored or co-authored approximately 470 refereed scientific articles and has successfully supervised over 30 PhD students. His work contributes to understanding global soil security and sustainable agricultural practices. In recognition of his excellence in research, he was elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and was awarded the VV Dokuchaev Medal by the International Union of Soil Sciences in 2014.
