Dr. Alexandra Shelton

Biography

Alexandra Shelton is an Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education, specializing in special education. Her research focuses on improving literacy outcomes for secondary students with disabilities, particularly those from ethnically, racially, and linguistically marginalized backgrounds. She employs evidence-based literacy instruction interventions and teacher professional development coaching to address reading difficulties. Shelton has directed federally funded grants that provide systematic coaching for middle school teachers to promote the use of evidence-based literacy practices. Her publications have appeared in leading academic journals including Review of Educational Research, Teacher Education and Special Education, Journal of Learning Disabilities, Contemporary Educational Psychology, and Intervention in School and Clinic. Prior to earning her Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Maryland, she was a high school special education teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools, where she served students with disabilities in English language arts, reading, math, and science.
