Biography

Alexandra Werth is an assistant professor at the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering, having joined the faculty in Fall 2023. Her work focuses on Engineering Education Research (EER), a branch of discipline-based education research (DBER) that examines unique educational aspects in engineering contexts. Dr. Werth is particularly interested in developing evidence-based teaching methodologies and educational tools that foster authentic learning environments. She is trained as an education researcher and engineer, holding dual bachelor’s degrees in engineering physics from Swarthmore College, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Computer Engineering from Princeton University. During her doctoral studies, she specialized in developing a non-invasive mid-infrared glucose sensor using quantum cascade laser spectroscopy for diabetes management. After her Ph.D., she pursued postdoctoral research at the University of Colorado Boulder focused on physics education research, specifically in undergraduate instructional labs. Notably, she played a pivotal role in developing, implementing, and assessing a large-enrollment introductory physics course-based research experience. Dr. Werth is dedicated to advancing evidence-based teaching practices and tools that enhance access and efficacy in authentic learning environments, particularly in biomedical engineering. Her work often transcends disciplinary boundaries and delves into the interconnected components of the educational system.
