Dr. Alexis Riley

Biography

Alexis D. Riley is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Science Education at New York University Steinhardt. She has a Ph.D. in Science Education from the Teachers College, Columbia University, which she obtained in the Fall of 2021. Her research focuses on the legacy and innovations relevant to healing Black women educators, emphasizing the role of instinctual improvisational teaching methods in science education. Alexis has held faculty positions at several institutions, including California State University-Los Angeles and Barnard College, where she taught as an Assistant Professor and Adjunct Assistant Professor, respectively. Her work has been published in notable journals such as the Journal of Research in Science Teaching and the Journal of Science Teacher Education. She served on the Board of Directors for the Association for Science Teacher Education and is recognized for her efforts in advocating for science education that meets the unique needs of teachers and students of color. Additionally, she has received accolades, including the Health Equity Champion Award from the NYC Department of Health, in acknowledgment of her contributions towards addressing health disparities and institutional racism in education.
