Dr. Alison Coleman

Biography

Alison Coleman is a lecturer in the English department at Yale University, where she also serves as the Director of Special Projects. Her responsibilities include oversight of Yale College Class Day and the authorship of Yale's accreditation reporting for the New England Commission on Higher Education. Coleman has designed and taught multidisciplinary writing seminars covering a wide range of topics from food studies to unplugging, and serves as a tutor for 'Daily Themes.' In 2023, she was awarded the Fred Strebeigh and Linda Peterson Prize for Excellence in Teaching by the instructional faculty member at Yale. As a fellow at Ezra Stiles College, Coleman is actively involved in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ Humanities Instructional Faculty Working Group, where she leads workshops on writing, editing, pedagogy, and communications strategy for academic departments, faculty staff members, and student groups. Her pedagogical approach emphasizes deceleration and immersive inquiry, reflecting her current research focus on the habits and mindset of artists, scholars, and social contributors. Prior to her role at Yale, she began her career as a journalist with the Miami Herald, where she reported local news, edited and designed copy for the newspaper, and contributed as a writer and editor for the feature sections of 'Tropical Life,' the Herald's design magazine. Coleman holds a bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University and pursued doctoral study at the University of Miami, Florida.
